Rich irony at heart of school equality row

-

Sir, – It is with a degree of disgust that I read the news that a vigilante group within Carnoustie High School is demanding that my colleague the Rev Mike Goss be removed as a school chaplain because of alleged “hate speech”.

I have known Rev Goss for many years and not once have I ever heard him use any kind of hate speech.

We have a tiny minority vigilante group seeking to have a hardworking and diligent chaplain removed from his post on the basis of lies, gossip and their intolerance.

What is even more disturbing is that Carnoustie High School set up an “Inclusion and Equality Group” last year to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues – as if they were not raised enough.

Has the school set up similar groups for the disabled, people who are English, Muslims, Christians, or other minorities? If not, why not?

The irony is that this group wants to exclude someone simply for not holding their views on same sex marriage. It is hardly inclusive or equal.

The use of children’s student vigilante groups to enforce the State morality is reminiscent of Chairman Mao’s “Little Red Guards”.

It is a chilling indicator of the intolerant and often authoritarian communities many of our institutions are becoming.

I hope that the school and the Church of Scotland will not give in to this cyber bullying, and will be swift in indicating their support for Mike Goss, a fine and compassionate minister. David Robertson. St Peters Free Church, Dundee.
