100 years ago

Two important facts stand out in Sir Douglas Haig’s bulletin which was put out to the newspapers last night – (1) we are counter-attacking and (2) the French are co-operating with us to the west of Wytschaete Ridge. These counter-attacks unfortunat­ely achieved only temporary success owing to the continuous hostile attacks upon the positions, but the presence of our Allies gives ground for hope that our future forward movements will be made in everincrea­sing strength.

50 years ago

Cardenden folk woke up yesterday to one of the biggest shocks they’ve had for years. The old stream, which had been known for as long as anyone could remember as the Red Burn, had turned a lurid shade of green overnight! Some of the theories about the remarkable change were as colourful as the burn itself. A Courier reporter found out from the NCB power station half a mile away that the colour came from green dye known as fluorocene which had been used to detect leaks.

25 years ago

The history of St Andrews was brought to life in colourful fashion during the annual Kate Kennedy procession held by the university students on Saturday. For the first time in almost 25 years, female students were permitted to take part in an effort by the all-male Kate Kennedy Club to make itself more representa­tive of the St Andrews student community as a whole. The change of heart followed controvers­y earlier this year. In all 23 females took part in this year’s parade.

One year ago

A police inquiry is under way at a Tayside castle over claims a former member of staff double booked weddings and had deposits paid into his personal account. It is claimed the former employee at Guthrie Castle in Angus wiped the booking records from the castle computer system before “doing a runner”. The popular wedding venue is urging couples to make contact as they figure out their calendar of events and try to establish the amount of money missing.
