The stars of the health service have been honoured at a celebration event in Dundee’s Apex Hotel.

The winners of the NHS Tayside Staff Appreciation and Recognition (Star) Awards were announced after staff and members of the public were able to nominate individuals for going the extra mile in their jobs.

The categories for nominations were: outstanding individual (clinical); outstanding individual (non-clinical); outstanding team; innovation in practice; inspiring educator and quality/ service improvement.

A gold, silver and bronze winner was announced for each category.

The gold winners included Ninewells Hospital’s maternity ward – ward 38 – for best team and the Viral Hepatitis Service for innovation in practice.

The outstanding clinical individual gong went to Rachel Hunt, senior charge nurse at ward 3 – a general medical ward where people are transferred from an emergency ward – in Perth Royal Infirmity.

The other golds went to “inspiring educator” Mary Malone, paediatric respiratory nurse specialist at Ninewells and Ann Eriksen, executor lead and commissioner at Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Services, for quality improvement.

The event was hosted by Professor Jason Leitch, national clinical director, healthcare quality and strategy directorate with the Scottish Government.

It is a great honour to be nominated by colleagues and members of the public and I would like to congratulate everyone who won an award, all of our finalists and nominees.”

Malcolm Wright, NHS Tayside chief executive, said: “The people of Tayside have really embraced these awards by nominating individuals, teams and services in their hundreds and this reflects the high regards our committed staff are held in by local communities.

“We know that being recognised in these awards is very much appreciated by staff and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to nominate.”

NHS Tayside worked with Tayside Health Fund, the Academic Health Science Partnership in Tayside and the Apex Hotel to deliver the awards.
