Paul Sheerin is certain his former assistant at Arbroath Stewart Petrie will steer Montrose over the finishing line on Saturday and clinch title glory for the Gable Endies.

The Angus side need just a point from their game with Elgin at Links Park to be crowned League 2 champions.

Sheerin, who is under-20s coach at Aberdeen, was manager at Gayfield when the Lichties secured what was the Division Three title in 2011.

Now he is backing “SP” to match that achievement with Montrose.

Sheerin said: “Stewart has done a great job in 18 months at Montrose and I am sure he will get them over the line.

“He has not had a massive budget or anything like that but added one or two key players and made Montrose a good side.

“He did a lot for Arbroath in my time there especially as I was still playing and he will help his players handle the occasion on Saturday.

manager. However, he has handled that as well.

“We left Gayfield in 2014 and I am sure a couple of clubs are looking at him now and thinking they should have taken a chance on him before Montrose did.”

Meanwhile the Gable Endies are encouraging supporters to arrive well ahead of kick-off on Saturday.

A point for Montrose will be enough to secure only their second league title in their 139-year history, the first one coming back in 1984-85.

Chairman John Crawford said: “There is a fantastic buzz about the town and we are expecting a bumper crowd on Saturday.

“As a result and in the interests of everyone’s safety, I would like to urge all our supporters to arrive in plenty of time to ensure everyone makes it through the gates in time for kick-off.

“We will be operating extra turnstiles and will get people into the ground as fast as we can, but we would really appreciate the cooperation of our fantastic support in arriving early.

“Unlike the Brora (pyramid play-off) game back in 2015, where we were able to delay kick off, the league will be keen, for obvious reasons that we stick to our scheduled 3pm kick-off time.

“I hope everyone comes along and has a safe, enjoyable and memorable afternoon.”

The club confirmed that normal league prices will apply, which are £13 for an adult, £7 for an Oap/under-16 and £16 for family entry (one adult and one under-16).
