Consultation on plans to improve dual carriageway in town

Residents call for revamp including new cycle path

- Janet Thomson

Angus Council is to consult with Arbroath residents over plans to make the dual carriageway which cuts through the town more accessible.

Residents have frequently highlighted the road as an overpowering and unnecessary feature many people want to be addressed.

In response, plans have been drawn up to make the route more user-friendly to pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike, as well as improving the overall look of the road between Ladyloan and Burnside Drive.

Public consultation events are being held on Friday and Saturday where people can see what’s suggested and have their say on the proposals.

These include a cycle/footway created along the road, junction improvements and better pedestrian links.

Lois Speed, independent councillor for Arbroath East and Lunan and communities vice-convener, said: “This

is a terrific example of what can come from local people expressing their views about the places where they live.

“This proposal is a direct result of Arbroath people having their say.

“But we still need their input. Although we have some plans drawn up, we want to know what residents think.

“I hope as many people as possible come along to these events to look at these proposals and give their opinion.”

The drop-in sessions will be held on Friday from noon to 3pm at the Arbroath Community Centre at 40 Marketgate, and on Saturday from 10.30am to 2.30pm at the Webster Memorial Theatre.

UK sustainable transport charity Sustrans is funding the project to develop and promote active travel in Arbroath, which comes in response to public opinion aired through the town charrette and other community events.

Engineering firm Aecom carried out traffic assessment of the four-lane roadway and identified improvements that could be made.

The public events will allow residents to view drawings and visualisations of proposals, with further information at the event.

Thereafter, residents can have their say by email to Localplan@angus.gov.uk

The deadline for comments is Monday May 7.
