City’s class act gives children best start in life

-

The junior (primary) years at the High School of Dundee provide a real head start. For instance, did you know that junior pupils receive specialist teaching in science, modern languages, ICT, art, music, drama, PE and home economics?

With applications for August 2018 places and future years currently being accepted, the school extends a warm invitation to prospective visitors who wish to find out what sets the High School of Dundee apart from other primary schools.

Junior years open afternoons on May 7 and May 15 offer the chance to experience the school on a normal school day. Visit classes, talk to staff and ask any questions you may have.

On May 8, an activity afternoon will give P1, P2 and P3-aged children the chance to try a few fun class activities in music, ICT and art.

Meanwhile, parents will have the opportunity to chat to staff and current mothers and fathers.

Booking, which is required for both events, can be made by contacting Mrs Alex Mcgrory on 01382 202921, email admissions@highschoolofdundee.org.uk

The school has a long-established record of academic excellence.

In 2017, that was reflected in every one of the pupils who applied to university receiving an offer. Quite astonishingly, all 15 medical applicants secured places at medical schools across the UK.

One pupil, Elle Wyatt, was recognised as Scotland’s top performer in the 2017 SQA exams after winning the SQA’S academic excellence award.

In addition, High School of Dundee pupils scored the top, or joint top marks in three separate Advanced Higher subjects: maths, physics and chemistry. In physics, two pupils shared the top mark! Pupils from the High School of Dundee also achieved joint top marks in three N5 subjects: maths, French and Italian. These achievements do not take place in a vacuum.

The school’s focus is on enabling every pupil to reach their full potential. The integrated curriculum therefore brings together the academic, the co-curricular and pupil health and wellbeing to provide a co-ordinated, genuine all-round education which always keeps the pupil at its heart.

In S3, pupils continue to choose eight subjects, while in S5 they can select from 26 subjects at Higher level.

At Advanced Higher 21 subjects are available.

The school’s highly developed pastoral care system is woven into the fabric of everyday life, ensuring that the pupils have all the support that they will need to flourish.

Opportunity extends far beyond the classroom. Pupils have access to a range of almost 100 inspiring co-curricular activities. They take advantage of outstanding indoor and outdoor sports facilities at the Mayfield campus and regularly take part in exciting trips.

Dedicated bus services are offered from various locations and, in addition to the existing Fife service, a new one has been added, stopping at Glenrothes; Freuchie; Ladybank; Cupar; Dairsie and Balmullo.

Early years funding towards places at our purpose-built nursery at Mayfield is now available. This friendly facility is open to all, from 7.30am to 6pm, 50 weeks of the year.
