Lawrie of Kinross is new Young Farmers’ leader

Sayfc: New national chairman says a number of initiative­s are in pipeline

Kinross farmer David Lawrie has been elected national chairman of the Scottish Associatio­n of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC).

He succeeds Suzie Dunn, who stepped down following a high-profile year for SAYFC with the launch of the multiaward-winning Are-ewe Okay? mental health campaign Bale Art and a steady growth in membership numbers.

Mr Lawrie said: “We have a number of new initiative­s in the pipeline and will continue with the Are Ewe Okay? which has attracted such support.

“I am looking forward to meeting as many SAYFC members at their clubs and during the Royal Highland Show.”

Commenting on her year, Suzie Dunn said: “It has been an incredible experience working with such a talented and motivated team of people.

“I have no doubt that the agricultur­al and the rural industries are in safe hands with this generation coming through.

“However, we need to continue to invest and nurture this talent to keep young people working in the sector.”

Kim Taylor, 28, from Turriff has been appointed national vice-chairwoman, and regional roles have been filled by Michael Gunn of Forss YFC (North), Michael Rattray, 24, of Strathearn (East) and Lizzie Mcjannet, 26, of Ayr YFC (West).

Lianne Brunton, 24, of East Fife JAC was elected internatio­nal chairman, with Iain Wilson, 25, of Mearns JAC appointed agri & rural affairs chairman. Andrew Mcgregor, 24, of Carluke takes on the role of agri and rural affairs vicechairm­an.

The agricultur­al and rural industries are in safe hands with this generation. SUZIE DUNN
