Six-month-old girl’s injuries ‘unexplaine­d’

A baby girl is fighting for her life in hospital after being found with serious injuries in Arbroath.

The six-month old tot was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee before being transferre­d to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. The child’s injuries have been described as “unexplaine­d”.

Police were standing guard at the front and back door of the house on St Vigeans Road yesterday. It is understood a couple in their 20s live at the address.

Detective Inspector Ray Birnie said: “The child is in a critical condition in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. Inquiries are at an early stage.”

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 3pm on Saturday.

The investigat­ion is being conducted in partnershi­p with Angus Council’s social work department and NHS Tayside.

Officers were on guard outside the front and back door of a house yesterday.

Neighbours reported seeing a large police presence in St Vigeans Road on Saturday.

Arbroath East and Lunan Independen­t councillor Lois Speed said: “My thoughts and prayers are with the baby and family at this critical time.

“I have first-hand experience of Edinburgh Sick Kids and she is in the best possible hands.”

Detective Inspector Ray Birnie said: “The child is in a critical condition in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

“Inquiries are at an early stage,” he added.

Police were out in force in the area on Saturday.

Officers could be seen searching back gardens.

Police said they were part of a joint investigat­ion being carried out with health and council officials.

A spokesman said: “A six-month-old female child is in a critical condition in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

“The serious injuries she has sustained are as yet unexplaine­d.

“The investigat­ion is being carried out in joint partnershi­p with Angus Council social work department and the NHS.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We dispatched one ambulance to the scene.

“We transporte­d one infant to Ninewells Hospital and the patient was then transferre­d to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.”
