Driver who crashed car in middle of day was six times drink limit

An Angus drink-driver was found to be more than six times the legal limit after crashing his car on a rural road in the middle of the day.

Fellow motorists stopped to help Andrew Mcdonough on the unclassified road between Edzell and Glen Esk on November 30 when they saw him stranded after hitting a fence post in tricky conditions.

But Forfar Sheriff Court heard the 50-year-old’s boozy breath and a bottle in the car were giveaways that he had been drinking and Mcdonough ended up at the police charge bar.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond told the court the witnesses came upon Mcdonough around 12.40pm.

“Police attended and he gave a positive roadside reading, and was then taken to police headquarters in Dundee where he gave a lower reading of 139 microgrammes,” she said. The legal limit is 22.

Mcdonough, of North Esk View, Edzell, admitted driving with excess alcohol and no licence or insurance on November 30.

He was admonished and disqualified from driving for 16 months.

Also at Forfar:

Lynn Black, 44, of Mountskip Crescent, Brechin, had sentence deferred for six months after previously admitting charges of assault and behaving in an aggressive manner while holding a knife at her home address on February 18.

Sheriff Gregor Murray told Black he would continue the matter to determine her fitness for unpaid work.

“Make no mistake, these charges mean you potentially face going to jail,” he said.

“You will not be dealt with leniently for this offence.”
