Dundee FC midfielder Paul Mcgowan was arrested following an alleged assault outside a city nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 30-year-old former Celtic player was arrested outside the Underground nightclub on South Tay Street at around 2am.

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 30-year-old man was arrested in South Tay Street, Dundee, shortly after 2am on Monday morning in connection with an alleged assault.

“He was charged and released on an undertaking to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court at a later date and a report is to be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

Mcgowan and his team-mates had attended the club’s player of the year celebrations earlier on Sunday evening.

Mcgowan, who has also played for Hamilton and St Mirren, was signed by former Dens Park boss Paul Hartley in 2014.

He has made 130 appearances for the Dark Blues and scored six goals.

Mcgowan recently signed a one-year extension with the Dens Park side.

He made his debut for Celtic in 2007 – where he played alongside his future Dundee manager Paul Hartley – but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular.

He was sent on loan to Morton for the 2006-07 season, where he won the Second Division title with the Greenock side.

The midfielder was then loaned to Hamilton Academical for part of the 2008-09 season.

In 2010-11 he was loaned to St Mirren and signed for the Paisley club permanently after being released from his Celtic contract.

The sought-after midfielder’s contract with Dundee had been due to expire at the end of the season but the club offered him an extension after Tayside rivals St Johnstone made an official approach for the player. Dundee FC declined to comment. smorkis@thecourier.co.uk
