“Mystery” solved

-

“Regarding the reader enquiring about a mystery train over the Tay Bridge most days just before noon,” emails Derek Hoskins, “This train is one of the ‘new’ Scotrail high speed trains on driver training runs.

“It is booked to depart the yard at Dundee at 11.54am and heads to Fife before returning through Dundee just before 3pm heading to Aberdeen.

“These training runs have been running since late 2017, initially just between Aberdeen and Dundee but, as more of the trains were released, have now grown to four sets. These are currently based at Aberdeen/dundee/ Edinburgh/inverness and continue with driver training/familiarisation.

“On any given weekday it is possible to see three of the four at Dundee in a relatively short space of time, as all bar the Inverness set are booked to visit Dundee two or three times each day.

“If all three are running it is possible to see them all in Dundee station around 9.30pm. They rarely run on Saturday or Sunday, but it is not unknown.

“The following free website for Scotland’s online railway community can provide detailed information about these and many other workings of trains in Scotland: scot-rail.co.uk”

I am grateful to other readers who took time to email information about the train, so thank you to Victor Pilka, as well as Angus and Janice Stewart.
