Helping firms find export opportunities
TRADE: Scottish Development International advises firms of all sizes on where good prospects lie
Growing Scotland’s economy by helping companies make the most of international trade opportunities is a key priority for Scottish Development international (SDI).
International exports have been increasing, rising by £460 million to £29.8 billion in 2016.
The service sector and food and drink industry were key drivers behind this growth – valued at £11.6bn and £5.5bn respectively – with Europe and the US continuing to be significant export markets for Scottish companies.
Building on this success, SDI is focused on supporting Scottish companies at all stages of their exporting journey – from entering new markets to growing existing ones.
SDI’S interim managing director Neil Francis said the body was seeing more businesses prioritising international sales.
He said: “Knowing where to find the biggest international opportunities can often be one of the main challenges for companies looking to export, but that’s where we can help.
“With our team of experts all around the world, we’re already seeing a growing number of Scottish businesses embracing international opportunities, but we want to encourage even more.
“That’s why, earlier this year it was announced that we’re to double our staff numbers in Europe and establish hubs in countries with the most opportunities for Scottish companies.
“This move will ensure we continue to help more ambitious companies to target new markets and create real economic impact for Scotland.”
A recent evaluation examining the impact of international trade and investment support delivered by SDI between 2012/13 and 2015/16, showed that for every £1 spent on international trade activity, £4 is generated for the Scottish economy.
