Fees for burial or cremation of children to be abolished

Councils: Agreement to remove charges across Scotland

Fees for the burial or cremation of children are to be eradicated in Scotland.

The Scottish Government and council body Cosla have agreed to work together to remove all local authority charges for child burials and cremations.

Most councils do not charge a fee currently but the move will ensure that no bereaved family across Scotland faces such a cost.

Last week, Perth and Kinross Council axed fees for those up to 18 years old and is considering raising the age limit to 21.

The cost for a child between the ages of two and 15 can be up to £144, rising to £918 for people 16 and over.

Burying a child between the ages of two and 11 in Dundee costs up to £408, with the price rising to £827 for children over the age of 12. In Angus, there is no charge for under-15s and no immediate plans for any changes.

Fife does not charge for the burial or cremation of anyone under 16.

The national move is supported by Scottish Government funding of around £500,000.

Communities, Social Security and Equalities Secretary Angela Constance said: “The death of a child is one of the most tragic experiences that anyone can go through. At such difficult times, it is important that we look to support parents and families.

“We have been actively looking for some time at ways in which we can further support bereaved parents in Scotland with funeral costs.

“Most local authorities do not charge child burial and cremation fees but the picture across Scotland is a mixed one, as local authorities introduce adult burial and cremation charges at different ages across the country.

“We agree with Cosla that no family should have to pay to bury or cremate their child. I am therefore delighted to confirm this agreement between the Scottish Government and Cosla.”
