Postcode lottery – DD area has produced 21 lucky millionaires
Lottery: More than 208 players in Dundee and Angus have banked prizes of £50,000-plus since launch
An incredible 21 millionaires have been made in Dundee and Angus since the National Lottery was launched two decades ago, it has been revealed.
A total of 208 players in the DD postcode area have banked prizes of more than £50,000 since the first draw in November 1994, while 21 people have won more than £1 million.
The area’s residents have in the past been described as some of the “luckiest in the UK” after it was revealed the postcode had one of the highest number of big-money wins.
Across the UK, the National Lottery has created 5,000 millionaires since it was launched, with 1,000 of these made in the past two and a half years – equivalent to one every day.
The organisation has also conducted a survey which reveals what winners say is the best thing about winning.
Contrary to popular wisdom, National Lottery millionaires have declared the best thing about their win is not their newly-glamorous lifestyle, but the happiness gained from sharing the cash with others.
In all, 98% of respondents revealed they gifted cash to family, with 19% of all winnings given away.
The news comes after a not-so-lucky Dundee punter lost out on a £1m fortune earlier this month after failing to claim a winning Euromillions UK Millionaire Maker ticket.
And the same happened in the city in September last year when an unwitting £1m winner in the same competition did not claim the prize.
The cash from unclaimed wins is distributed to the organisation’s charitable causes.
