Saints star compared to Premiership’s finest

-

Young St Johnstone striker John Robertson is cut from the same cloth as Premiership penalty box predators Leigh Griffiths and Jason Cummings, according to the Perth club’s head of youth.

The 16-year-old made his first team debut for Saints at the end of last season and Alistair Stevenson believes Tommy Wright has a “very talented player” on his hands, who reminds him of the Scotland centre-forwards.

“I liken John to Leigh Griffiths and Jason Cummings,” he said.

“Like them, he has something about him.

“He is a prolific scorer. He really has it in him to improve and do really well.

“John is not only a goalscorer but a very talented player.

“His rise has so far been meteoric and I feel he has the ability to keep going in an upward direction.”

Jason Kerr has been the Saints academy’s biggest success story of recent seasons and Robertson’s path to Mcdiarmid Park has been a similar one.

“Both are products of Tynecastle Boys’ Club,” said Stevenson.

“We had an agreement that both Jason and John would stay with them until they were 16 and then go full-time with us.

“To play for the first team in the Premiership at the age of 16 is some going.

“He is one of the youngest players to play in the Premiership and he has only just started.

“Next season will be a really big one for him and I’m sure more goals will come.”
