Old sections of road to be formally stopped up

-

Angus Council has agreed to stop up part of the old public road on the outskirts of Muirhead.

Members of the local authority’s communities committee agreed a report by Ian Cochrane, head of infrastructure, which proposed the stopping up of two sections of the B945 Muirhead to Alyth Road.

It was upgraded a number of years ago and realigned in the vicinity of Dronley, to the northwest of the village.

At the time of the original works several sections of road became disused as a result of the realignment.

Councillors were told some of the sections were used in the past by Angus Council/tayside Contracts for local storage of materials and other uses, but all are no longer needed for that purpose.

At a meeting in Forfar, members heard the stopping up of a previous portion of road was promoted at the request of a local farmer. He was the owner of the piece of road in question and requested that section of road be formally stopped up.

The farmer has now identified two further sections of former road which are also within his ownership and has requested they also be stopped up. When the work is completed the sections will revert to the farmer’s control.

As the section of road have not been formally maintained for some time there will be no future maintenance cost savings arising from the stopping up, the committee was told.

Councillors also approved the disposal of small pieces of land at Third Row, Maryton and St Ninians Road, Padanaram after they were declared surplus to requirements.
