PEOPLE: Sister-inlaw acted as midwife for infant son’s surprise arrival

A woman has told of how she spent her Saturday night delivering her sister-in-law’s baby – in a car outside her front door.

Milena Biewald, 26, and husband Andrzej, 30, were about to head to the hospital but did not get moving before their son started to arrive.

Sister-in-law Aldona, 35, said the couple had come to drop off their daughter Vanessa at her house in Rosyth because Milena was having stomach pains.

But by the time they were ready to head off for the hospital in Kirkcaldy it was already too late.

Aldona said: “I grabbed two passersby and told them to ring for an ambulance.

“We couldn’t even get her in the house because the baby was coming that quickly.” While the passers-by were on the phone, NHS staff talked Aldona through the entire delivery.

Aldona said that she had tried to remain calm throughout the swift birth – which felt much longer.

“I just tried to keep calm and did what I needed to do, but it was scary.

“It may have been a quick birth but, for me, it felt like a long time.

“The medical staff were very congratulatory and said I should think about becoming a midwife.

“I would do it again if it was needed but maybe not in a car.”

Maksymilian Biewald was born at 5.45pm on May 12, weighing 8lb and arrived before an ambulance could even get to the scene.

Mum Milena had only started to have contractions less than two hours before her new son came into the world.

She said: “I first started having contractions at 4pm and less than two hours later my baby was here.

“My husband was away for only two minutes to drop off our daughter at Aldona’s and when he came back I said it’s coming already.

“He couldn’t believe it and said it’s not possible and I said it is: look!” Milena added.

“I don’t remember much – it wasn’t until after that Aldona explained what had happened and that some people had called an ambulance.”

Maksymilian’s quick arrival came as a bit of a shock to Milena following a far lengthier experience with her now three-year-old daughter Vanessa.

Milena said: “It was a bit of a difference to my first child as I was in labour for eight hours with her.

“I was worried there might be complications but the midwife told me Maksymilian is perfect.

“We’ll be sure to tell him all about his arrival into the world in a car when he’s older.”
