The Angus farming community was in shock at the weekend following the death of a man at a major grain merchant’s business on the outskirts of Brechin.

Emergency services attended WN Lindsay Ltd at Stracathro shortly before 9am on Saturday following reports a worker had been involved in an accident.

Police Scotland and ambulance personnel were in attendance but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A male was working on the roof at the location and had fallen.

“Sadly, he died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

“His family have requested no further details are released at this time.”

As is customary, the health and safety executive was informed of the death.

An HSE spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the incident and are making

preliminary inquiries alongside the police.”

The site, which sits adjacent to the southbound A90, was cordoned off with Police Scotland officers blocking access to the public.

Crime scene officers combed the area, focusing on one of the main sheds which had what looked like a roofing contractor’s equipment taped off at the front of the building.

The tragedy took place as the region’s farming community gathered in nearby Brechin for the annual Angus Show.

Angus councillor Bob Myles, who farms on the outskirts of Edzell, spoke of his shock on hearing the news about the fatality at the site.

The independent member for Brechin and Edzell said: “My thoughts go out to the family of the person involved.

“Most of the farming community tend to be involved with them (WN Lindsay).

“It is one of these things you take for granted all the time, you don’t recognise just how much danger there is.

“Any death in these circumstances is absolutely tragic.

“My sympathies go out to the family of the individual who will obviously be known by many.”

WN Lindsay is Scotland’s leading independent grain merchant.

The company has the largest grain storage capacity in Scotland through its sites at Stracathro, Forfar, Gladsmuir in East Lothian and Keith in Morayshire.

No one from the company was available for comment at its Stracathro or Tranent offices.
