100 years ago

At a meeting of Carnoustie Food Control Committee, Mr Alexander Cant, executive officer, stated that the Food Controller had declined to sanction the proposed increased price of milk to Carnoustie retailers. The maximum price allowed is 2s, but the Local Committee proposed to make the retail price 2s 2d per gallon for June and 2s 4d for July and August. The milkmen threatened not to bring in the extra supplies of milk from Dundee middlemen as they had been doing in summer.

50 years ago

One of four battle ensigns flown by the battleship HMS Collingwoo­d, at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 was presented by the Queen Mother to the training establishm­ent HMS Collingwoo­d at Fareham, Hants. It was a wedding gift to the late King George VI and Queen Mother from Lieutenant Campbell Tait, who served with the King, then a sublieuten­ant in the battle. She talked to a party of 25 Jutland veterans, among them John Addie, 72, of Peterhead, who said he came from her part of the country.

A Stirlingsh­ire couple are back together – reunited after spending 35 years and a world apart. James Baxter, 78, travelled 12,000 miles to return to Haggs, near Denny, to meet his former wife Molly, 71 – and they are now deciding whether to remarry. In the 1950s the couple were among many who decided to take advantage of the £10 “assisted passage” scheme run by the Australian government. James sailed ahead, but TV footage of crocodiles and snakes put Molly off going and the couple lost touch.

Gordon Strachan is staying on as Scotland manager until further notice following the remarkable match against England. Two fantastic free-kicks from Leigh Griffiths lit up Hampden to put the Scots 2-1 up going into injury-time in the World Cup qualifying Group F clash against the Auld Enemy. However, Scotland had what would have been arguably their greatest victory over the English snatched away from them by a Harry Kane strike three minutes into stoppage-time.
