Farm trip reward for Longforgan pupils after art contest victory

-

A class of children from Longforgan Primary School won a visit to Redmyre Farm at Invergowrie where they saw fields of oats, hedgerows, a pond and bird life.

The trip was the reward for class member Prithvi Sudarshan winning a Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) art competition.

The pupils were shown around by estate manager Brian Kaye who pointed out squirrels feeding and gave the children a ride in a tractor and trailer to see some wild bird cover to feed birds through the winter.

They also saw an owl nesting box which had been taken over by a kestrel and were encouraged to listen to nearby bird life and watch a group of young cattle.

GWCT education officer Iona Laing said: “The pupils enjoyed their day, despite the fog, and lots of good questions were asked about the farming year, the food chain, and what happens when numbers of one species increase too much and the effects this can have.

“The youngsters also put a lot of effort into the worksheets provided for them which will help remind them of their visit to Redmyre.”
