Come and try: Chance to have a go at cricket, rugby, crazy golf, sailing, angling and others

- Janet Thomson

Forfar gala week will officially launch at Forfar Loch on Sunday with a new event highlighting an array of sporting activities on offer in the country park.

Families are invited along to try their hand at cricket, rugby, sailing and angling, to name but a few, in an event put together by Angus councillor Lynne Devine and Forfar Action Network (FAN).

The SNP member for Forfar and district has worked closely with groups and clubs based in the country park and is hoping for a good turnout on Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Visitors will also be given the opportunity to try out the re-opened crazy golf, radio controlled boats, the outside gyms and canoeing.

Ms Devine, a member of FAN, said: “All the clubs round the loch have been really enthusiastic about this and have worked together to make this a great experience for those who come along.

“It is a chance to let people see all the fantastic activities there are round the loch and try them out for fun.”

Becci Oosterhoorn, of the sailing club, said: “Although we have our own

open days, we thought this was an opportunity to work with the others round the loch so people can see it’s a lively place.”

Members of Canmore Angling Club will also be on hand to welcome anyone wishing to take up a new hobby.

John Buchan of the club said: “We have a large membership but are always looking for new people to join.

“We saw this as a chance to introduce Forfar folk to our sport on the loch.”

FAN volunteers will be on hand on the day to direct visitors to the various activities.

Those taking part will be given a challenge card with all the stations on it.

If six are completed the card will go into a prize draw with prizes donated by the clubs taking part.

The Fun Around the Loch is followed by a programme of events throughout the week, culminating in Forfar Gala Day on Sunday June 24.

The grand parade will leave the Montrose Road Centre at 12.30pm, arriving at The Myre for the official start of the gala day at 1 pm.

Also featuring prominently is Forfarfest, which runs from Friday June 22 to Sunday June 24.

Eleven venues will host a variety of bands over the three days.

Mark Guild of main sponsors Guild Homes (Tayside) Ltd: said: “Forfar Gala Week is about the community.

“It is for the community and provides an excellent opportunity for the local community to work together and create their own success.”
