One-way system in place as bridge inspection continues

-

A historic bridge could be partially closed for a year and a half while road engineers examine ways to safeguard its future.

The Abbeyton Bridge near Fordoun has been reduced to one-way from this week so experts can make a detailed assessment of the 170-year-old crossing.

All northbound traffic over the structure, which is also known locally as the Cocketty Bridge, is being diverted via the junction with the A90 at Fordoun from this week, although southbound traffic will be able to continue using the B966 as normal.

The closure comes after a routine inspection identified defects that called for further technical investigations.

Aberdeenshire Council structures manager Donald Macpherson said the arrangements would be in place for up to 18 months.

“We will be undertaking some computer modelling of the structure to identify what remedial works might be required,” he said. “The bridge is nearly 170 years old, so reducing traffic to one lane will help lighten the load while this work takes place and reduce the risk of further deterioration.

“We will be continuing with structural assessment work and moving to any associated repair work as a priority.”

Emergency and pedestrian access will be maintained while the one-way system is in operation. No disruption to rail services is expected.

Proposals to introduce a traffic light system on the bridge were dismissed, due to its proximity to the A90 and the potential risk of tailbacks building up and affecting the trunk road.
