Local knowledge pays off for Lee in semi-final

-

The Scottish National Championships moved from the heats to the first of the semifinals at LINTRATHEN.

There were 29 competitors in this semi-final and between them they caught 102 fish for 182lb 8.4oz with the largest going to the scales at 4lb.

Top rod was local angler Lee Anderson of Lintrathen AC with 16 fish for 25lb 15.10oz.

The winner started off at the Gravel Bank but having drawn a blank there he moved to the Rhododendron area around noon.

Lee took his fish on a cat booby and buzzers fished on a midge tip line.

In second place was Kevin Mccable of Change FF AC with 12 fish for 18lb 13.4oz. He took five fish at the Dam Wall and caught seven more after moving to the Rhododendron area about 2pm. He fished buzzers on a midge tip line.

In third was Lee’s boat partner, Ray Anderson of Leslie and Glenrothes AC, who had 10 fish for 15lb 14.3oz, also using a cat booby and buzzers on a midge tip line.

The water has cooled considerably at LAKE OF

MENTEITH, bringing fish nearer the surface.

The washing line with candy booby and diawl bach or cormorants are doing well fly wise, with dries like double decker’s and yellow owls also to the fore.

The second early morning shift takes place on Saturday (4-9 am) with most boats getting near 10 fish each last weekend.

It is rowing or electric outboards only until 8.30am.

In the Scottish Club Championships, top team was Black Loch AC A with 23 fish. Kelso AA B took second with 13 fish with ABC&D AC A third with 11.

On the sixth night of the Fario Fly Boat League Brian Mackenzie was top rod with eight fish to extend his lead in the league, with Jim Twaddle and Gil Farid both getting seven fish.

Other notable catches included: Jimmy Miller, 15 fish, all caught on dries and safely returned; Falkirk Flydressers, 33 fish, 75lb 4oz; D Ezzie, two boats,18 fish; J Fairlie, 21 fish.

Fishing at LOCH LEVEN has been challenging but some good sized trout have shown up.

Mr Hunter and his friend had seven brownies between them. They kept one, which they estimated at 3lb, but which actually weighed in at 5lb 4oz.

Lewis Kerr was out on Sunday with Kinross Angling Club and caught and returned a beautiful 60cm fish with an estimated weight of 6lb.

Lewis, out on his own just off the Horn Bank north of St Serf’s, had a real tussle, coming out on top after a good five minutes. The club recorded 15 fish for the day.

Top rod with a runaway catch of six fish was Stuart Moodie, who also had six a couple of days later, all taken on buzzer methods.

Pulling methods are taking a few fish in fresh, steady winds.

Buzzer methods are accounting for most of the trout but snatchers like black claret and olive, various sparklers, Kate Mclaren and Black Pennel are all worth a try.

The best areas are still mainly the deep water contours in the North between Scart Island, North Buoy and Elbow.

The area from East Buoy to the west point of St Serf’s is also holding fish.
