Top prices and sheep show champions at Caledonian Marts

Caledonian Marts Ltd, Stirling, sold 1,347 prime lambs, hoggets, sheep, cast ewes and tups.

Champion of West of Scotland Suffolk Sheep Club show was Bankhead Farmers (£128) and the reserve champion came from J Lawrie, Tillyrie (£109).

Outwith the show, top price went to Balbedie Farm, Kinglassie, for a 51kg Beltex at £138. Top ppk went to Pett, Muthill, for a 41kg Beltex at 290ppkg. In total 446 prime lambs ave 232p.

Spring lamb: Texel £137 Carriston; Char £136 Bankhead (Mckendrick); Cont £129 Bankhead Farmers; Tex X £125 Bents; Beltex £122 Easter Ochtermuth­ill; Suff £115 Linnhead.

Hoggets (466) averaged 172p (-12p on the week) selling to £103 from Mount Lothian and to 209ppkg from Meikle Seggie.

Texel £99 Grange of Lindores; Suff X £96 Mount Lothian; Mule £95 Mount Lothian; Cont £94 Meikle Seggie; BF £85 Dalchirla.

Also forward were 435 cast ewes and tups. Heavy ewes averaged £82.25 selling to £133 for a Texel from Carriston, Star of Markinch. 276 export ewes averaged £61.38.

Texel £114 Carriston; BF £65.50 East Mitchelton; Suff £103 Upper Unston; Chev £92 Kinninmont­h; Border Leicester £106 & £98 Pitlessie; Char £110 Bankhead (Mckendrick); Beltex £81 Lochend; Mule £96 Pirnhall. Tups sold to £121 for a pen of Texels at £121 Golland, Kinross.

Lawrie and Symington, Forfar, had forward 16 breeding cattle and 59 store cattle.

Breeding cattle AA £1,150 & £1,100 Knockbarry; Shorthorn £950 Knockbarry. Stores: Bullocks (30) sold to a top of £1,185 for a Limousin x from Scronley and to 2.47p for a Simmental x from the Firm of DJ Smith to average 2.28p.

Heifers (21) sold to a top of £1,070 for a Shorthorn from Scronely and 2.69p for a Charolais x from Burnside Farms to average 2.20p. Young bulls (8) sold to £690 and 2.79p for a pen of Charolais Cross from Burnside Farms to average 2.29p.
