Ugandan adventure begins for Monifieth High youngsters
Monifieth High School pupils have set off on a once-in-a-lifetime cultural exchange” to Uganda.
A group of youngsters from the school left for East Africa yesterday and will stay for two weeks before returning on July 7.
The focus of the trip is crosscultural education and to provide the students with an unforgettable experience in a part of the world they may otherwise never see.
The youngsters will be involved in the rejuvenation of school gardens in the Amuria district that have been impacted by recent droughts.
International development charity Signpost International has been partnered with the school for over a decade and has worked to facilitate groups of youngsters to spend time in some of the communities they serve.
Funds raised by the charity will go towards supplying tools and seeds, enabling local pupils, teachers and parents to produce enough food for school meals.
S6 pupil Paulina Markowska said: “I first made the decision that I wanted to go to Uganda after seeing a presentation by the school’s 2016 India Team after their trip to India.
“It gave me an understanding of the importance of these trips and how they can truly impact the lives of the people we meet in such a positive way.”
The MHS team will also spend time in the schools, running English classes and taking part in lessons.
Head teacher M C Mcinally said: “I am extremely proud of the pupils and staff for their dedication to the training offered by Signpost, fundraising activities and the humanity for others.
“They will gain a huge amount personally from their experiences in Uganda and look forward to hearing about their trip on their return.”
