100 years ago

Several interesting matters affecting the conduct of the butcher trade under war conditions were discussed last night. Storage centres for frozen meat were to be established in various parts of the country and one of these would be in Dundee. In the allocation of supplies, the convener remarked that in this matter they did not expect any preferential treatment for Dundee. They had a fine supply of meat in Forfarshire, but they did not selfishly desire to keep it to themselves.

A group of five hill walkers accomplished a difficult traverse in the Cairngorms at the weekend – and found themselves close to the scene of the dramatic rescue there. The Fife party, members of the Ceres Club, made a 33-mile hike over six peaks starting at Ben Avon and ending at Cairn Toul in 19 and a half hours. At one point they watched the rescue helicopter flying to the aid of two climbers injured in a fall at Corrie Etchachan, five miles from Derry Lodge.

The Government yesterday awarded Devonport dockyard the £5 billion Trident refit contract and left Rosyth feeling betrayed and full of “anger, rage and disillusionment.” Rosyth’s consolation is that it is to be given responsibility for the refitting of 18 warships, although everyone in the town, from the yard’s workforce to shopkeepers, doctors, housewives and even children, were left with a strong feeling of betrayal, with 450 jobs at risk at the major Fife employer.

Councils in Tayside and Fife have some of the highest rates of pest control callouts in the UK, new figures reveal. A survey conducted by the not-for-profit trade body British Pest Control Association (BPCA) asked each local authority in the UK for details on categories and figures regarding pest call outs in2015/16. Out of every area in the UK, Dundee came out on top for all mammals (other than rats and mice) such as foxes, rabbits and squirrels – cases of which have quadrupled since 2014/15.
