To Mr George Martin, who has retired from the position of schoolmaster in the parish of Kinettles after 52 years’ service, belongs the distinction, it is believed, of being the last of the old parochial schoolmasters of Scotland. His retirement was marked in a manner fitting such a worthy record, when he was presented with National War Bonds to the value of £170 by pupils past and present of Kinettles School and other friends. There was a picnic for the children. Two London men, David Brickwood and Derek Rothera, who left Dover in an attempt to cross the English Channel by pedal float, were missing last night. They were last seen 90 minutes after they set out, six miles off Dover and being swept south-westward by the tide. Channel shipping has been alerted and Deal coastguards last night broadcast an appeal to all shipping in the Channel to look out for the lost pedal men. The men had set off without their speedboat escort and without a pilot. A Scottish volunteer aid worker was killed by a sniper’s bullet in Sarajevo, only days after arriving in Bosnia to deliver vital aid supplies. And in a separate incident, a locally-based interpreter was killed by a sniper’s bullet as she walked in her garden only yards from the British Army base at Vitez. The Scotswoman who died was Christine Witcutt , 56. She was killed after a gunman opened fire on her lorry in Sarajevo’s most dangerous road, which has been dubbed “Sniper’s Alley.” Supporters of Dundee’s two senior football clubs demanded Rangers be stripped of 14 honours after the club lost its “Big Tax” case at the Supreme Court. Fans from across Tayside took to social media to say the record books should now be rewritten. Rangers won 14 cups and league titles between 2001 and 2010, including defeats of Dundee FC in the 2003 Scottish Cup final and Dundee United in the League Cup final five years later. Rangers had used Employee Benefit Trusts to make “loans” to players.
