Will Strictly be Mark Beaumont’s next extreme adventure?

- GEORGE MAIR

Adventurer Mark Beaumont, who smashed the round-the-world cycle record, has revealed another challenge idea – to go on Strictly Come Dancing.

The Dundee University rector, 35, is famed for record-breaking ultra-endurance challenges including twice pedalling around the world, cycling the length of Africa and rowing to the magnetic North Pole.

He said he gets inundated with new offers when he is back in Scotland but his young daughters, Harriet and Willa, would prefer to see him dance on TV.

Beaumont, who launched his latest book, Around the World in 80 Days: My World Record Breaking Adventure, last night, said: “I don’t feel like I need to go in the jungle or go on Big Brother. The only one I would entertain, genuinely, because I’ve got two daughters, is Strictly.

“It would be wonderful. My kids don’t care about cycling around the world but can you imagine daddy was on Strictly; that would be amazing.

“I don’t know if I can dance – I do a pretty mean strip the willow but I’m not sure about the tango. I genuinely don’t know if I could do that. My wife would probably say no but I’d love to prove her wrong.”

Beaumont revealed he has already quizzed former Strictly contestant Judy Murray and her dance partner Anton Du Beke about the show.

He said: “I know Judy Murray quite well. I was down at Wimbledon and I was chatting to her there.

“Her dance partner from Strictly was there with her so I got to chat to him about it as well.

“I’d love to do it. It would definitely take some forward planning but I would definitely entertain it.”

Last year Beaumont pedalled more than 200 miles per day to cycle 18,000 miles around the world in just 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes.

In completing the feat, he broke two Guinness World Records and beat the previous record by 45 days.
