A man has been charged in connection with a major incident that forced the closure of the M90 near Dunfermline on Wednesday night.

Police confirmed a 27-year-old is expected to appear in court charged with road traffic and disorder offences following reports of a large-scale brawl on the route, which started at around 7.45pm.

A 17-year-old boy was also arrested by officers investigating the disturbance, and a report is expected to be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

News of the arrests came as detectives issued a renewed appeal for witnesses in the wake of the incident, which attracted a huge police presence including specialist resources.

Armed police and a force helicopter were deployed, while a squad of police cars blocked the route at junction 2a as the fight – which is understood to have involved members of the Travelling community – ensued.

Officers could be seen stopping several caravans and motorhomes in the car park of the nearby Premier Inn at Duloch, and marked police cars were stationed at flyovers along the A92 towards Kirkcaldy.

Police Scotland are keen to speak to anyone who may have information or dashcam, CCTV or video footage that can help their investigation, and further arrests have not been ruled out.

The force has not been drawn on whether Wednesday’s disturbance is linked to a series of road rage incidents in the Kirkcaldy and Thornton areas last Friday evening, when a fight involving around 20 men broke out.

Officers attended reports of a road rage incident near the Redhouse roundabout where two cars were seen deliberately ramming each other, before the fight was reported at Balbeggie Avenue a few minutes later.

Police then received a further call about two cars crashing on Thornton Main Street, and all three incidents were said to be connected.

Anyone who can help the investigation into the M90 incident should contact 101 with reference number 3740 of July 25 or pass the information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
