Violet Jacob celebration in song

-

The poems of Violet Jacob will ring through the Angus church where a stained glass window is dedicated to the memory of the famous Scots writer.

Hector Christie and Chris Edwards will perform some of her best-loved works, set to music, in Glens and Kirriemuir Old Parish Church tomorrow evening at 7.30pm in an event hosted by Kirrie Heritage Trust.

The eldest daughter of the 18th Laird of Dun, Montroseborn Jacob spent the final years of her life in Kirriemuir prior to her death in 1949.

Hector Christie said: “Some have existed as songs but Violet did not write melodies.

“We have written some brand new tunes, set some of the existing tunes to new arrangements and in a couple of cases set the poems to traditional Scottish airs.”

Jacob wrote in her beloved Angus dialect and her poem The Wild Geese was shortlisted in a poll of the nation’s favourite poems in 2006.

Scottish Renaissance figure Hugh Mcdiarmid described her as “by far the most considerable of contemporary vernacular poets”.

She married a soldier and spent much of her life travelling the world, but after the death of her husband she returned to Angus and settled in Kirriemuir.

Tickets, which include light refreshments, cost £10 for adults and £5 for under-18s.

They are available from Joshua Plumtree in Kirrie, the church office on Bank Street and at the door on the night.
