Police and politicians have slammed a driver caught speeding past an Angus primary school at 75mph as children left for the day.

Traffic officers say they clocked the Audi A3 driver as it reached a speed nearly four times higher than the 20mph limit outside Carmyllie Primary. The force said it happened as primary and nursery children were leaving the building on Wednesday.

Tayside road policing inspector Ray Cuthill said: “Thankfully nobody was hurt as a result of the driver’s actions but it is clear that the outcome could have been much, much worse.”

Angus Council’s children and learning convener Derek Wann said: “I am disgusted that anyone would indulge in such dangerous and selfish behaviour, which so easily could have ended in tragedy.”

A driver has been charged after allegedly travelling at 75mph outside a Tayside primary school as children were leaving for the day.

Officers were carrying out speed checks near Carmyllie Primary in Angus on Wednesday when the Audi A3 passed through the 20mph zone at about 3.40pm.

A man was stopped and charged with dangerous driving.

Tayside road policing inspector Ray Cuthill said: “To drive in such a manner and at such speeds within a built-up area is completely unacceptable.

“It is even worse that a driver would choose to drive at a speed approaching four times the speed limit past a primary school and nursery just as the children have finished for the day.

“Thankfully nobody was hurt as a result of the driver’s actions but it is clear that the outcome could have been much, much worse.

“Police officers in Tayside will continue to enforce road safety and to prioritise the areas that would benefit from it most, such as outside schools and areas with a history of collisions.

“Obviously the police cannot be everywhere at once and we rely on drivers taking responsibility for their own actions and driving with some common sense – something that was clearly lacking in this instance.”

Angus Council children and learning convener Derek Wann branded the incident an “absolutely appalling scenario”.

He said: “This is absolutely outrageous and irresponsible behaviour.

“This is an absolutely appalling scenario and I am disgusted that anyone would indulge in such dangerous and selfish behaviour, which so easily could have ended in tragedy.

“I would like to commend the police for apprehending this individual and I hope that in due course, if found guilty, the sentence handed down will reflect the way that the vast majority of people in the community will feel about this case.

“I think people are starting to get the message about watching their speed when driving near schools but this case highlights the fact that there is more to be done and I would urge people to be extra vigilant, especially at times when pupils are going in or coming out of schools.”

Police said the man will be reported to the procurator fiscal in due course.
