Forfar wary of never-say-die spirit at Rovers

Weir highlights come-from-behind victories for today’s opponents

RAITH ROVERS v FORFAR ATHLETIC

Forfar manager Jim Weir is well aware that this afternoon’s opponents Raith Rovers are a hard team to finish off.

Three late goals turned the game around for Rovers at Airdrie last weekend but Weir already knew all about the character in the Kirkcaldy side.

“That’s three times they’ve come from behind this season and got a result,” said Weir.

“I’m sure Airdrie will say it was selfinflicted but it was an incredible scoreline.

“Raith are one of the favourites to win the title and this is the first of two tough away games, with back-to-back derbies to follow them.”

John Baird has hit the ground running at Station Park, scoring three goals so far.

But there is still more to come from the experienced forward, who will play against his old team today.

“He’s getting better for us,” said Weir. “His fitness is building with the more games he plays and he’s still got the knack of scoring.

“I think he’s enjoying his new coaching role as well.”

Strike partner Dale Hilson has a chance of playing today after taking part in training on Thursday night.

Dylan Easton returns from suspension but Michael Travis is injured.

Youngsters Sam Clark and Jack Allan have been loaned to Forfar West End until early January.

Rovers will be without Iain Davidson, whose red card in that remarkable win over Airdrie means he is suspended.

Kyle Benedictus has had a head knock so will be sidelined along with Ross Matthews, while Lewis Milne and Lewis Vaughan are both doubts.

Raith boss Barry Smith is hoping for less drama but the same amount of character from his players today after injury-ravaged Rovers were a man down and trailing 3-1 to the Diamonds with just three minutes to go before they stormed back to win 4-3.

Smith said: “When the players came into the dressing room after the game, I told them to enjoy what was a great achievement but also to learn from the experience. It was a serious test of character but they were equal to that and showed tremendous desire to win.”
