• The Howff

Established in 1564, with land granted to the burgh of Dundee by Mary Queen of Scots, the Howff – which means “meeting place” – is a burial ground which holds some of the most important tombs in Scotland. Buried there are a number of notable locals and the city’s past lord provosts. Unlike traditional Scottish cemeteries, this one hosts an unusually high number of Roman-style coffer tombs and inscriptions that discuss not the deceased but death itself.

• HMS Unicorn

Dundee is home to not one but two historic ships. First launched in 1824, the HMS Unicorn is weathering well. It is one of the six oldest ships in the world and Scotland’s only representative of the sailing navy. This well-preserved frigate is now a museum and also hosts events such as talks and live music. The Princess Royal is the patron of the Unicorn Preservation Society.

• Verdant Works

The city’s vibrant industrial textile heritage is brought to life at this refurbished mill. Built in 1833, it had a workforce of 500 people who were employed to prepare and spin jute. After falling into a derelict condition once the golden days of the industry were over, the mill was bought by Dundee Heritage Trust in 1991 and a restoration project got under way. The site opened as a museum in 1996. The current exhibition is Brick City – a celebration of some of the world’s favourite and most famous buildings, recreated in Lego bricks by artist Warren Elsmore.

• The Mcmanus, Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum

Located in the city centre – and one of Dundee’s most beautiful buildings in its own right – the gallery holds artworks and artefacts from archaeological wonders to natural history and fine art. Housing temporary exhibitions as well as permanent displays, the museum has currently rebranded itself as The Mcmenace in honour of its Bash Street’s Back show, which is a celebration of the 80th birthday of comic The Beano, which was born and printed in Dundee by publishers DC Thomson.
