Wanderers stay top as Grove see off students

-

A successful weekend for Dundee’s top league clubs consolidated pole position for Dundee Wanderers who were in Glasgow, while Grove Menzieshill put home advantage to good use as they got their campaign off the ground at DISC. Wanderers had new recruit Iona Fleming to thank for their half-time lead at Hillhead.

Past and present internationalists Heather Elder and Charlotte Watson added their contributions after the break to see the rejuvenated Dundee squad comfortably over the line at 3-0.

Grove also ran up a confident 3-0 result. Jude Mcmullan’s close-range tap-in edged them ahead of a lively Glasgow Uni side with the last of the first half action. Conceding set pieces proved to be the students’ undoing as Sam Sangster provided the set ups for youngster Lucy Smith and Lauren Kingston to hit the target.

After having to settle for a share of the spoils in week one, Western Wildcats and Clydesdale Western threw down the gauntlet as potential title contenders with comfortable 4-0 and 3-1 wins over respective opponents Grange and GHK. Things are sure to hot up when Edinburgh University, champions for the last four years, enter the race next week at Dalnacraig.

St Andrews University opened their Division 2 campaign with an encouraging 3-0 home win over Granite City Wanderers. Dundee Uni’s first foray is away to Inverleith this Saturday.

A 5-0 loss to Uddingston indicates a tough season lies ahead for Grove IIS who are in the throes of a rebuild with youngsters stepping up to Championship League 1. Kinross’s double header weekend brought mixed results in Championship 2. Saturday’s long haul to

Ayr was rewarded when Louise Cunningham and Gail Nelson secured the win. They were unable to maintain their momentum in Sunday’s trip to the capital. Although Nelson and Vicky Carver ensured they were level at the break it was hosts Grange II who put in a strong finish to claim the points at 4-2. Perthshire’s young squad followed up last week’s victory by claiming Kelburne’s scalps at Glasgow Green. Florrie and Melissa Mitchell and Amy Keating were on target.
