Scotland take gold medal at international in Wales

-

It was with a mix of trepidation and anticipation that Team Scotland set off for Wales for the Autumn International.

Llyn Brenig had been a good venue for Scotland’s teams but with disappointing results at the last two internationals it was hard to be confident.

However, team manager Derek Keenan put those disappointing results to bed as he guided his team through the practice days to set the scene for a gold medal on match day.

The match was fished to a three fish kill followed by catch and release.

At the end of the session England were first to the scales and recorded 65 fish for 134lb 13.5oz, which would put them in third place.

Ireland recorded 51 for 107lb 10.375oz, which put them fourth.

Scotland’s 79 for 164lb 15.375oz was enough to secure the gold medal.

Wales and their 70 for 144lb 8.125oz earned second spot.

The ponds at FORBES OF KINGENNIE are still in need of some heavy rain to flush them out.

Water temperatures and algae levels are reducing, which should help overall catches.

Jake Gilchrist, one of the junior ticket holders, enjoyed another fine session returning six fish including a superb double-figure rainbow.

Ian Barlow also had a successful morning, releasing eight fish. Buzzers, various daddy longlegs patterns and small dries were the order of the day.

On the Burnside Pool, Ian Gordon led the way with an excellent result, returning 16 fish. Jock Leslie also did well releasing eight in a short session.

The water at ORCHILL TROUT FISHERY is fishing well with dries and down to about three feet with either a ‘quick quick’ or a ‘very very’ slow retrieve.

The fish are slowly coming back to normal after being in too warm water for three months,

KINROSS TROUT FISHERY has been fishing well this week with float tubers becoming a common site on the water.

Kinross announced the first Float Tube Open will be held on Sunday October 14 and thereafter each month throughout next year running to a final at the end of 2019.

The fishery is now a member of the British Float Tube Association Waters. Yearly full memberships are available, limited to 10 anglers and there are only three spaces left.

The monthly Trout Masters competition on the water finished with three contenders – Fraser Thomson with a rainbow of 16lb, Bert Clee with one at 14lb 2oz and Robert Mccall with one at 13lb.

September started well with three crackers so far – Derek Linton landed a fine 15lb rainbow, Roy Haxton a 13lb rainbow and Ian Welsh a fine 12lb 8oz fish.

LAKE OF MENTEITH. A total of 816 fish were put in the lake last Tuesday to complete stocking for the National Final on Saturday.

Some fine-looking fish are coming off the water just now with quite a few boats well into double figures.

It has been a windy week so pulling is always a good option.

Floaters and sink tip lines have worked well and the flies have ranged from lures to dries.
