Lord Anderson, Edinburgh, performed the formal opening ceremony of the tank Julian at Coupar Angus yesterday – Provost Chalmers presiding. In an eloquent appeal for funds, Lord Anderson said we were fighting in this war to ensure the reign of peace, while our foes were striving to establish the rule of force. The war was being waged by the Allies in order that all wars might be brought to an end. To no nobler ends could the resources, the abilities and the means of the realm be devoted. Wemyss Local Committee heard an appeal for action to ease the problem created by parked vehicles in Kennoway’s housing scheme. It was coupled with a request for consideration of a speed limit under 30 miles per hour. Councillor Tom Corrigan, Kennoway, said that in the past three years there had been 30 car accidents without injury, 40 with slight injury, a number with serious injury to eight children and one fatality. The matter has been raised with the authorities in Cupar. A major housing aid operation was launched by Dundee District Council yesterday after early morning fires knocked out the lifts and stranded hundreds of residents in two Ardler multistorey tower blocks. The fires – in Cawdor Court and Downfield Court – caused damage estimated at £40,000 and are thought to have been started deliberately. Housing convener Fred Welsh criticised the fires as “an evil act” that went beyond vandalism. “I’m extremely angry,” he said.
