Konta lets big lead slip in Tokyo

Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) and Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) finished well down the Senior British Women’s Open Amateur Championsh­ip field at Crail Golfing Society where Laura Webb from Ireland won the title by nine shots with a fourunder-par total of 140 (67-73). Sheena, with four double bogeys in her second round, scored 81 and 88 for 169 and a share of 57th place. Alison shot 84 and 97 for 191 and joint 81st place.

Carnoustie golfer Will Porter, winner of the Scottish U18 boys championsh­ip in 2015, this week recorded his best finish so far on the US college golf circuit.

Now a student at Chattanoog­a University, Porter, 20, finished third with scores of 66, 71 and 72 for a seven-under-par total of 209 in the Memphis Intercolle­giate Championsh­ip in Tennessee.

Porter was also a member of the winning Chattanoog­a team, the university’s first victory since 2012.

They are coached by Callum White (Monarchs) and Kerr Thomson (Perthshire). Johanna Konta let a big lead slip away in the second set as she was beaten by Donna Vekic in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo yesterday.

The British No 1’s fragile confidence was again to the fore as, having led 4-1 with a double break, Konta, pictured, lost six of the last seven games to go down 6-3 7-5.

Camila Giorgi came from a break down in the final set to beat defending champion and top seed Caroline Wozniacki.

Trailing 2-0 in the decider, unseeded Italian Giorgi broke back immediatel­y and won six of the last eight games to win 6-2 2-6 6-4.

Seventh seeded Australian Ashleigh Barty was beaten 6-4 6-2 by former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus while Czech Barbora Strycova beat Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 7-6 (7/5) 3-6 7-5.

At the Korea Open in Seoul, Agnieszka Radwanska bowed out in the last 16 to Irina-camelia Begu 6-4 6-3.
