Father fears for safety of family after second raid on property

Fife businessman believes latest incident was “a professional job”, after brazen thieves broke in and stole £59,000 BMW

A traumatised Kirkcaldy family are being forced to leave their home after being broken into twice in less than 12 months.

Scott Gibson was horrified to discover his property, on Dunvegan Avenue, had again been targeted on Friday night and his £59,000 BMW stolen.

The 45-year-old believes the raid was carried out by professionals who were watching the family home before he left with his wife on Friday evening.

The robbers, who were caught on CCTV, gained entry to the house by smashing the back door with a brick before grabbing the vehicle’s keys.

The thieves, who wore ski masks and tracksuits, then mopped up their footprints as they left the property.

Mr Gibson, a vehicle body shop owner, said he and his family will have to move.

He said: “This was a professional job. They knew exactly what they were doing. I went out with my wife just after 6pm, and there was a car, an Audi, which I suspect was sitting along the road watching.

“We came back at around 10.50pm and they’d been into the house at 10.30pm.

“This wasn’t a pair of opportunists – they were as cool as a cucumber, just wandering around the garden. After they smashed the back door in and got the keys for the BMW, they actually mopped the floor to clean their footprints as they walked out the house backwards.

“We’ve got CCTV cameras, an alarm system and lighting outside the house. What more can I do to protect the property?

“We have to move house now. My family just don’t feel safe in our home anymore. I’ve got to think about my family’s safety.

“My daughter Nadia is only 15 and she didn’t sleep at all on Friday night because she was so traumatised.

“I don’t think it was actually the BMW they came for. I have a Ford Escort Mexico that I think they were after but thankfully it wasn’t in the garage. It’s a £30,000 car.

“I’ve now decided to put it up for sale through an auction company because I’d rather someone bought it than have it stolen.

“You work hard all your life and then these people just come along and think they’ll take your things. This is the second time we’ve been broken into.

“In January, they stole jewellery that my mum had left for my daughter after she passed away. It was never recovered, which is really upsetting.”

Mr Gibson has been told the BMW 535 M Sport saloon was seen turning left on to Oriel Road before heading towards the Kirkcaldy West roundabout.

Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses and are urging anyone who was in the area and who may have CCTV or dash cam footage around the time of the theft to come forward.
