100 years ago

In the course of an address at the opening meeting of the 77th session of the School of Pharmacy of the Pharmaceut­ical Society, held in London, Dr Addison referred to the rude awakening we had soon after we went to war because of the dependency of this country on Germany for many drugs and fine chemicals. The story of our combat with the drug supply will provide a most interestin­g and attractive example of many of our national achievemen­ts during the war.

50 years ago

Mr George Brown, deputy leader of the Labour Party, fired conference delegates with his old political fervour at Blackpool. Presenting the party’s mid-term manifesto, he showed that although he is now removed from the Cabinet he is still linked with Labour’s old fighting spirit. But although delegates responded with enthusiasm, other speakers were quick with criticism. Eric Heffer commented: “Great speeches alone do not solve the problems with which we are faced.”

25 years ago

A “Golf Day” for potential members of the proposed 18-hole course attached to the developmen­ts at the House of Gray on the outskirts of Dundee attracted around 450 interested golfers yesterday. Developer Latif Horton was upbeat about the attendance and clearly delighted at the level of interest, which has already seen over 50% register an interest in membership once the course and associated leisure facilities are open. Membership is expected to cost an annual £350.

Firefighte­rs battled a major blaze at a former Kirkcaldy secondary school – sparking fears decades of history may have gone up in smoke. Crews tackled the emergency at the old Viewforth High School building after smoke was spotted billowing from a B-listed annexe. Flames took hold in the roof, which is understood to have collapsed a short time later, although there were no reports of any injuries. The building has lain empty since the school relocated to Windmill Campus in 2016.
