Teacher who was caught with indecent images is struck off.

Scottish teaching council finds former St Francis Primary staff member unfit for profession

- STUART MACDONALD

A disgraced primary teacher caught with indecent images of young girls on his home computer has been struck off.

Stuart Grant was placed on probation for six months and added to the sex offenders register following a court appearance in May.

Grant was a teacher at St Francis Primary School in Dundee, previously known as St Luke’s and St Matthew’s.

He admitted charges of taking or making indecent images of children at an address in Liff. Grant, 33, further admitted possessing indecent images of children.

His case was referred to professional body the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and he agreed to be removed from the teaching register.

In a written ruling, the GTCS said: “At the panel meeting, it was determined that your conduct has fallen significantly short of the standards expected of a registered teacher and you are therefore unfit to teach.

“The decision was reached based on the severity of the allegation and the lack of information as to your insight, remorse and remediation.

“Further, the public interest required a finding of unfit to teach, to uphold confidence in the teaching profession and the GTCS as a regulator.”

Forfar Sheriff Court heard police executed a warrant at Grant’s home last May after receiving information that the accused was in possession of indecent images.

When examined, investigating officers found three inaccessible images at ‘category C’ level of girls aged between five and eight.

After Grant’s guilty plea, St Francis head teacher Neil Lowden moved to reassure parents.

In a letter informing them of Grant’s crimes, he wrote: “I am able to confirm that there is no evidence to indicate that any of the children involved in the photographs were pupils of this school or any other school in Dundee.”

He added: “I understand how upsetting this information will be and I would like to assure you that our school follows all the necessary child protection measures and procedures to protect all children in St Francis.

“Mr Grant has not been teaching in our school since he was arrested on these charges in May last year.”
