Plans for a one-way route in Brechin will be put to residents
Brechin residents are to be consulted on plans to make a busy town street one-way.
People living in Damacre Road raised the possibility with Angus Council after airing concerns about the traffic situation and lack of on-street parking in the area.
Communities committee councillors have now agreed a consultation on proposals which could see the westerly one-way system put in place.
Council infrastructure services director Ian Cochrane said: “The current situation, where the generally narrow width of the street is coupled with intermittent on-street parking along its length, can cause minor congestion and restrict traffic flow.”
He said the existing kerbs at the junction of Damacre Road onto the busy B966 Southesk Street made it difficult for vehicles turning into and from the junction.
Visibility for vehicles exiting Damacre Road into Southesk Street is particularly poor due to the historical layout of nearby buildings.
Officials say a one-way system from Southesk Street towards City Road could ease congestion and provide scope for some additional on-street car parking on Damacre Road.
Mr Cochrane added: “The above proposals may, however, increase traffic speeds along the street and disadvantage some local road users who may use Damacre Road in an easterly direction to travel to local services such as the library and local supermarket.
“It is recommended that a formal consultation should be carried out in order to obtain the views of the local community and, if appropriate, develop the proposals for the area.”
Brechin and Edzell Independent councillor Bob Myles said: “I am pleased to see this coming forward. It’s a road that’s had considerable problems for many years now.
“There is a slight disadvantage for those residing in Damacre Road and going out to the east but it’s not a very good junction there anyway.”
Ward SNP councillor Kenny Braes said: “I hope that proper cognisance will be taken of the views of the residents.”
