Marine litter artwork exhibition
An exhibition of children’s artwork from an Angus community arts and sustainability project will open in Brechin later this month.
The exhibition, called Sea Change is made from recycled plastics and draws attention to the volume of marine and coastal litter on beaches and in the water, and highlights the need to recycle.
The project, led by artist Hetty Haxworth, is co-funded by Creative Scotland and Edzell School, via Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme. It has given children in primary schools across Angus the opportunity to learn about the environmental impact of plastics.
The resulting art installation contributes to a conversation about sustainability and suggests ways in which people can reduce the amount of litter affecting our coastline and seas.
Pupils from Edzell, Stracathro and Ferryden primary schools used collected litter and a range of artistic techniques such as screenprinting and kinetic sculpture to create a series of pieces inspired by the sea.
The project was also run at Barnardo’s Grenfell House centre in Arbroath with children from the local area, while pupils from Andover and Maisondieu primaries in Brechin will join the project during October.
The exhibition will run from October 20 to November 3, and the work has also been shown in smaller exhibitions in Edzell and Montrose.
