There is still no solution to the jute trade dispute, all works resuming as during the previous week. The reluctance to accept orders is manifest on the part of both spinners and manufacturers under the prevailing circumstances. The greatest caution is being observed. Requests for supplies of both yarn and cloth are numerous and there is disappointment when a buyer states a quantity of respectable dimensions. There is only hope of obtaining supplies when small quantities are mentioned.

Mrs Sarah Toye’s double egg – one perfectly formed egg inside another – excited officials of the British Egg Marketing Board and the Ministry of Agriculture. When Mrs Toye, of Bury chipped the top from her brown boiled egg at breakfast, her spoon struck the shell of the second egg inside. Mrs Toye said: “I have had plenty of eggs with a double yolk, and even a treble yolk, but I have never seen an egg, complete with shell, inside another egg.” A spokesman said: “This is an extremely rare case.”

Residents at a Deeside caravan park were counting the cost in the aftermath of the flood which has left them homeless and angry. Over 30 people had to be evacuated by lifeboat from the Lower Deeside Caravan Park at Maryculter after the River Dee burst its banks in the small hours and rose to a peak height of six feet above its normal level. One elderly man who had his leg in plaster was taken to hospital with suspected hypothermia, although his condition was not giving cause for concern.

Senior figures from across the political divide have called for urgent action to avert a poverty crisis in Highland Perthshire. Families across the outwardly affluent region face a daily struggle to survive and are having to turn to charity for support. Mid Scotland and Fife Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said the issues being faced by communities were “aggressive and damaging” and that focus on towns and cities obscured the deprivation endured by rural areas.”
