Community projects will benefit from golf extravaganza proceeds

-

Community groups, organisations and individuals in Carnoustie are being urged to apply for grants from the Open Legacy Fund.

The £100,000 scheme is part of the R&A’S drive to provide lasting benefits to local communities which stage golf’s original championship.

Projects that will have a lasting impact on Carnoustie will be able to apply for funding of £1,000-£10,000 or £10,000£90,000.

The details were outlined at a meeting led by the R&A and Angus Council in Carnoustie High School this week.

Locals were told the 147th Open at Carnoustie in July is expected to have generated about £70 million for the area after it attracted a record 172,000 spectators.

Johnnie Cole-hamilton, executive director of championships at the R&A, said: “We are pleased to be working with Angus Council to identify local projects that can benefit from the proceeds of staging the Open.

“This is a great opportunity to leave a lasting legacy from the championship’s return to the famous Angus links earlier this year.”

Angus Council leader David Fairweather said: “The 147th Open at Carnoustie was a tremendous success, both in terms of the sporting spectacle it provided and the great atmosphere it generated in the local community.”
