Carnoustie flower show at risk of being scrapped.
COMMUNITY: Show in danger of being disbanded due to insufficient committee member numbers
Wilting support has put the annual Carnoustie Flower Show at risk of being scrapped.
The show has been organised by the Carnoustie and District Horticultural Society since 1871 at various locations throughout the town, most recently at the Carnoustie Leisure Centre.
Chairman Andrew Child said the society and show is now in danger of being disbanded “as there are now insufficient committee members to organise the society and show”.
“The show is one of the few two-day shows still taking place in the area,” he said.
“Although the show is well supported by exhibitors there are not enough active committee members to organise the show which is planned throughout the year.
“The society has, therefore, decided to hold an extraordinary general meeting of the society on Friday November 30 at 7pm in the Philip Hall, Carnoustie, to which all members of the public are invited to attend to see if it is still possible to form a committee with sufficient members for the society and show to continue.”
This year’s flower show was a huge success with entries in competitive classes for cut flowers, pot plants, vegetables, fruit, floral art, preserves, baking, handcrafts and photography.
In a year of exceptional weather with lots of sun, high temperatures and less rain than in previous years, there were some excellent displays on show.
There were more than 230 competitive classes with more than £500 in prize money and 30 trophies and medals awarded.
The main function of the society is the organising of the show in August each year as well as the growing of plants for a plant sale each May to raise funds for the society.
Mr Child is encouraging anyone with a keen interest in gardening to come along to the meeting to offer their services to allow the show to continue.
The crisis comes at a time when the town has an award-winning floral community which recently enjoyed success in the annual Beautiful Scotland Awards.
Colourful Carnoustie received gold in the coastal town category, marking members’ efforts to give visitors a warm welcome throughout the summer.
Carnoustie independent councillor Brian Boyd said: “This would be dreadful to lose our annual flower show at a time when the town is winning awards for its floral beauty thanks to Colourful Carnoustie.
“I can only urge people who think they can help to turn out at the meeting and offer their services.
