Firecracker thrown into barber shop by vandal

Owner was cutting client’s hair when pyrotechnic was launched into foyer of premises causing loud explosion and sending sparks flying across lobby

A Fife barber shop owner has hit out after someone lobbed a firecracker into the foyer of his business.

David Logue was cutting a client’s hair at Hár Barber when he heard a “huge bang” coming from the entrance of the property on Leslie High Street.

The 28-year-old turned and saw a “big flash” as the firework exploded, sending sparks flying around the lobby.

Mr Logue, who opened his shop just three months ago, slammed the dangerous behaviour and said it was lucky no one was injured.

He said: “In the morning we heard a lot of the same sort of banging at around 11am coming from the back of the building. We weren’t too sure what it was.

“At about 6.45pm I was cutting a client’s hair. A 10-year-old customer had just left the shop when two minutes later there was this huge bang in the front foyer.

“When I turned around there was a big flash and loads of sparks flying all over the place. It sounded like a gun had gone off.

“It’s a small foyer and if the wee boy was in there at the time, it could’ve damaged his eyes or his hearing.

“At first I thought somebody had chucked a proper firework in the door but the more I look at it, it’s more like one of those flash bangs.

“Obviously it’s extremely dangerous behaviour and it could have been a lot worse.

“You don’t want people throwing those kind of things into your shops especially when people are coming and going out that front door all the time.”

Mr Logue added: “I phoned the police because you just don’t know if they’re going to come back and do it again or if they were going to do it somewhere else.

“I used to work in a supermarket and they would sell fireworks to anyone over the age of 18.

“In my opinion, we should not be letting every Tom, Dick and Harry buy fireworks over the counter because you don’t know who they could be giving them to.

“I would urge people to use common sense and not to use fireworks anywhere unless it’s an organised event.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to a premises in the High Street area of Leslie at around 6pm on Thursday following a report that a banger-type item went off near a business premises. Nobody was injured and no damage was caused.

“Officers would remind the public of the regulations around pyrotechnics and anyone found to be committing an offence will be robustly dealt with.”
