AC/DC fans rally for Kirriemuir memorial plaque plan

-

AC/DC fans are closing in on hitting a crowdfunding target to instal a memorial plaque to one of the band’s founders alongside the statue commemorating Kirriemuir’s rock son Bon Scott.

The plaque was commissioned by fan Davie Aberdeen in honour of Malcolm Young who, along with younger brother Angus, founded the band in 1973.

The Young brothers emigrated with their family to Australia and it was there that they met Kirrie baker’s son Bon, who became the lead singer of the group at the beginning of its journey to global fame.

The AC/DC frontman died tragically in 1980 and is remembered in a lifesize statue in Kirrie, unveiled in 2016 following a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign supported by fans from across the globe.

Thousands make the annual pilgrimage to Angus for the Bonfest event organised by Kirrie’s DD8 Music and, following Malcolm Young’s death in November last year, fan Davie commissioned the poignant tribute to the guitarist.

The inscription begins: “You played it so hard you played it so well, from A Whole Lotta Rosie to Highway to Hell”.

It concludes with the words: “Bon reached down and took your hand and said Come on Mal, you’re back in the band”.

Just a few days after its launch, a JustGiving page for the Malcolm Young plaque crowdfunder is close to its £500 target.

John Crawford, of Bonfest, said the aim was to site the plaque beside the Bon Scott statue, with any leftover funds being used to enhance the memorial garden around the monument at the entrance to the town’s Bellies Brae car park.
