Ban for 117mph A92 motorist

-

A Carnoustie man clocked close to home at 117mph on the A92 dual carriageway has been banned from driving for a year.

Craig Linnen was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work under a six-month community payback order when he appeared for sentence before Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown at Forfar.

The 25-year-old, of Keith Avenue, had previously admitted driving at speeds grossly excessive for the road conditions on August 11 while travelling on the A92 Dundee to Arbroath road at Muirdrum.

Depute fiscal Stewart Duncan told the court police using a hand-held speed gun stopped Linnen after he registered the three-figure speed, and when cautioned and charged the accused made no reply.

Defence solicitor Nick Whelan said: “He pled guilty at the outset and he knows he will be disqualified for at least a year.

“The consequences are significant for him.

“It is unlikely he will be able to obtain another job in the area of the building trade he works in and he therefore feels his home is at risk.”

Imposing the 12-month disqualification, Sheriff MartinBrown told Linnen: “I take into account what has been said on your behalf, however there is a minimum period which applies to this.”

Linnen must also sit an extended driving test after his disqualification period expires.
