‘Woman with knife’ causes commotion near primary school

MONIFIETH: Police called to control situation during morning school run

- STEWART ALEXANDER

Police officers and dog handlers swooped on a quiet residential street amid fears a woman had been seen brandishing a knife close to a primary school.

Neighbours on Grange Road, Monifieth, reported the incident in the middle of the morning school run.

Several police cars and vans flooded the street just before 9am yesterday in response to the calls.

Parents with children watched as officers stormed a property on the road.

One witness said: “I was heading down Grange Road just before 9am when it just kicked off.

“Police cars and vans were arriving in the street and officers were rushing out of their vehicles and up the path of a house across the road from the school.

“It all looked pretty serious. I heard that a woman was running about brandishing a knife around an area near three terraced houses just across the road from the school.

“There were loads of parents dropping their children off at the school just as the police arrived.

“The road was also very busy with morning traffic and the police arriving caused massive congestion.”

One woman said: “I saw several police cars and vans arrive in Grange Road around 8.50am.

“About six officers rushed out of their cars and vans and ran up a path leading to a house just across from the school.

“I also saw a police dog van so reckoned that a police dog must have also been used. I had no idea what was going on.

“You don’t normally see things like this going on in this area.

“It looked to me like some kind of major situation.

“The police cars and officers were there for around an hour and a half.”

One man who drove past the scene said: “I was told that there was real concern for people living in the houses police arrived at because a woman with a knife was reported to police.

“I was told that there had been shouting and screaming and that a woman was seen with a knife.

“I saw several police officers go into a house and there was also a dog taken into the garden of one of the houses police were at.”

Police confirmed they attended at an address on the road over concerns for a person.

A spokeswoman said: “The person concerned was left in the care of medical staff.”
