International sales boost for Dundee turbine firm

Seven-fold increase in profits for ATL Turbine Services welcomed

- ROB MCLAREN

A large increase in international sales helped Dundee’s ATL Turbine Services record a seven-fold jump in its annual profits.

The Baldovie Industrial Estate firm offers a range of specialised turbine component repair services.

Accounts for the year ending June 30 show a 31% increase in sales from £5 million to £6.5m.

Pre-tax profits during the period increased from £147,000 to £1.1m.

ATL chief executive Dale Harris highlighted the rise in international sales in the financial year. Turnover outside the UK rose from £442,000 to £2.2m.

He said: “ATL continues to deliver sustainable growth and robust financial performance. Over the last 12 months we quadrupled international sales, recruited technicians, engineers and support staff and invested in new process equipment.”

ATL is able to refurbish parts back to a fully restored condition so that they have the same integrity and durability as new parts.

The firm, which has been established in Dundee for more than 30 years, announced in April that it had secured a “significant” contract with Rolls-royce to maintain the GEM turbine which powers the Lynx helicopter.

The partnership runs until 2021 but has the potential to be extended until 2030.

The company, which employs 77 staff, is planning a number of significant investments to enable new product development, increased capacity and additional job creation.

Mr Harris has previously signalled his hopes to rapidly expand and create jobs over the next five years.

“I’m particularly pleased that we have just added another three trainees to our team, giving more young people a start,” he added.

“It is the skill of our team and their customer focus that sets us apart.

“As a result, ATL Turbine Services has excellent long-term customer relationships, a healthy pipeline of new work and is exceptionally well positioned for continued growth.”

ATL has joined the governmentbacked Sharing in Growth programme with the aim of making efficiency gains.

The engineering firm is among 400 Scottish companies that have signed up to the Scottish Business Pledge – a partnership between government and business with the ambition of boosting productivity, competitiveness, sustainable employment and workforce engagement and development.
